Thankyou sooooo much to Brislington Fellowship for donating the parachute! Its going down sooo well with the kids! Its been amazing to watch how just a big sheet of coloured material can affect the children's moods..
On boy, who is normally so hyperactive you can rarely keep him in one place for longer than a few minutes, just completely calmed down as he lay with most of his body under the parachute enjoyed watching the colours fly and feeling the breeze as we waved the parachute about.
Another boy, who normally prefers to do work on his own and does not socialize much with the other children, went nuts for the parachute as he dived straight under in fits of laughter. We scrambled on top trying to find him and if we took too long he would gradually crawl closer to the edge where Anna or I was and as we lifted the parachute up so he was in view he would show a cheeky glint in his eye to say 'come and get me'.. it is great to see him get so excited about something and spend time around the other kids.
The parachute is made very well and the material is great as it brushes the bodies underneath and can also be wrapped around the kids like a big hug, helping the kids with body awareness. The fun and laughter which one parachute can bring is huge.. Ive had great fun haha!
The children have come on so well.. I am particularly impressed by the boy who was found in his flooded house.. I explained about him in previous posts.. is now beginning to use speech and can say 'my name is..' and ' more water please' and 'thankyou' as well as ask for the toilet in lugandan.. oh yeh and he called me 'teacher tia' the other day so he is obviously growing in the understanding of his words as well.. Anna has done a great job
I have been feeling more and more settled here - it feels like my second home! - especially since I have a daily routine now.. I get up at 7am, make sure I have only enough money for my travel in my bag, plus I attach an emergency note to me and I buy a PK chewing gum to keep me awake before my long journey to work via Boda and Taxi. Ive sussed out which Boda's to get now.. I first look in the drivers eyes to see whether they are soba and whether they look dodgey.. and then I will try and make sure they have both wing mirrors, a comfy seat and a helmet. I know the route now which helps and I havnt had 'muzumgu' yelled at me much so I must be looking more like I know what Im doing and less like a tourist which can only be a good thing.
Oh by the way I was soo wrong about the weather as its actually just going into the rainy season and it actually has been raining quite heavily for at least an hour most days.. You would have laughed if you saw me hunched behind the Boda driver on this motorbike the other day trying to hide from the rain but failing miserably haha. But I have decided to get Taxi's now if its raining coz its quite dangerous getting on the back of a crazy motorbike in the rain and mud isn't it? I think I might need to buy a hoody or something.. a hoody! in Uganda! I remember mum asking me if I had packed my brolly before I left and I just laughed and packed suncream instead.. waaaa how wrong was I! Its still warm though.. still beats English weather :-p
Im off to meet some more English volunteer's who Anna has been introducing me to now.. bububyeeeeeeeeeeee xx
