I am pretty tired today. At night, Kampala changes into a place I try to avoid. The streets become blocked by streams of cars beeping, motorbikes weaving and lorries chundering along the dusty roads. The noise of the traffic and the street music combined makes sleeping pretty difficult.
The sound of heavy rain and thunder woke me up in the middle of the night. As I was tucked up in a secure guest house, with surrounding walls and it's own security guard, all I could think was how awful it must be in the slums. The rain must be so loud as it pounds on the tin roofs of the tiny 4m by 4m shanty houses. I struggled to sleep knowing that the people in the slums across the road were facing the muddy floods.
In addition to the thunder storm, last night there were a lot of strange noises which also kept me awake. There are a lot of dogs roaming the streets, constantly scratching themselves and looking like skeletons. They rummage through the piles of rubbish and are often poisoned by locals, so they can have a giggle as the dogs struggle to stand. Every now and again during the night you can hear the dogs collectively bark in aggressive and protective manner. The barking is then followed by screams from the villagers. When we asked what the noise was in the morning, we were told that it was the sound of thieves targeting the small shanty slums. It's just so awful.
This morning, feeling like a zombie from the nights events, we marched through the congested markets to see a lawyer in Kampala. We explained the future plans for the youth orphanage and discussed ways in which we can keep the project secure. We want to have a legal structure in place so that we can ensure that the money will be used for the correct purpose and all spending is accounted for. The lawyer is currently drafting this up so if the UK Trustees are happy with every thing, we can have it all set up here by the time we leave, so things are getting exciting!
